Frequently Asked Questions

If you have any questions about Dreamoor, check here first. Much about the game and the game world is here. If your question isn't answered, you can ask it in the forum, or contact AbyssDragon.

Q: What is BYOND and why does Dreamoor use it?
A: BYOND is a complete graphical engine for creating online games (amongst other things), created by Dantom International. It is powerful and flexible enough to handle everything Dreamoor requires, yet is absolutely free.

Q: Do I need to download BYOND to play Dreamoor?
A: Yes. It's a quick download, however. You can get it at BYOND.com.

Q: Does Dreamoor cost anything to play?
A: The current plan is for Dreamoor to be free to all players. Most likely it will remain that way. However, there are several ideas being considered that allow players to spend actual money in the game. One such idea is to have large castles cost real money to buy (all others cost game money). Other ideas are naming your equipment, and special equipment icons (like shield insignias). None will give a direct benifit to characters (such as super-strength), and none will cost very much money (only a couple of dollars) if implemented, and all are totally optional. Their only purpose is to offset some of the costs of developing and hosting Dreamoor without being too obtrusive to playing it.
Nothing's been decided yet, however. More information will be posted whenever a decision is reach--most likely sometime during beta testing.

Q: How many characters can I have per account?
A: You can have one character per BYOND key. This prevents making characters just to give starting equipment to other characters, or just to hold things. It also prevents using one character to get revenge artificially.

Q: Does Dreamoor have a roleplaying requirement?
A: Yes, but not a very strong one. Out of place names are not allowed--"l33t dud3!" is not acceptable, but anything medieval or fantasy sounding is. Out of character speech is not specifically banned unless it becomes a nuisance. GMs (especially those in charge of quests) will favor players who role-play more, however.

Q: Does Dreamoor have classes? Races?
A: Classes? No. How your character develops is based mostly on skills. Races? Yes, but not in the usual way. Races in Dreamoor are much like the races on Earth, and only represent differences in place of origin--all are human. That is, there are no elves, dwarves, etc. When creating a character you will have a choice of what race to be and what locale to begin in. Depending on what you choose you may get more options for things such as social class, family lineage, etc.

Q: What are the character stats in Dreamoor?
A: You can't think in terms of stats if you want to last long in Dreamoor. You have no numbers representing strength, intelligence, etc. Instead, your character's strengths and weaknesses are represented by your attunement to the four aspects: Chaos, Metal, Sky, and Void. Each of which is shown to you as a meter. You use some whenever you act: making an attack, casting a spell, or using a skill. It is also depleted when you take damage. If they should all fall to empty, you die.

Q: How do you learn skills?
A: Skills in Dreamoor all belong to one of the many Clans. Once you have joined a Clan, you can learn skills there. Each skill costs a single Destiny point.

Q: What are Destiny points?
A: Destiny points allow your character to grow and specialize. You start with five and you can spend them to learn skills, increase attunement to one of the four aspects, to restore any of the four aspects, or to perform a Feat of Destiny. Through Feats, Destiny is used to keep your character alive after death. Should you ever run out of Destiny, your character will be lost forever. There are many ways to gain Destiny points, but you can never have more than five at a time.

Q: What are Feats of Destiny?
A: Along with skills, most Clans teach certain Feats to their members. There are also some Feats that everyone has available. A Feat is a special action that your character cannot perform under normal circumstances--whether it requires extraordinary strength, speed, or mental ability. Through Feats, you're able to perform heroic or important actions--but at the cost of a Destiny point. As mentioned in the previous question, Feats are the only way to keep your character from suffering permadeath.

Q: How do Clans work?
A: There are many Clans in the lands of Dreamoor. They each teach many skills and feats, award titles, etc. Members can get various benefits like being healed for free. There are spells to teleport directly to your Clan Hall, and the Hall counts as a Haven--that is, you can log out safely there.
While you can have membership in as many Clans as you like, and can learn as many skills as you want, you can only attain Mastery in one single Clan. Your choice here is permanent. Mastery provides the very highest level skills and a special title, along with various benefits depending on the Clan.

Q: Can players form their own Clans?
A: Yes. Players can form their own Clans, much like in-game ones. Although they don't give out skills, they provide a convienent way for like-minded players to group together for any reason. Whether it be to form an army, or research magic together, you can do it.
Forming a Clan counts as your one Clan Mastery, but it provides many benefits. You have direct control over the Clan Hall, and can purchase the many implements available only to Clans.

Q: So what happens when I die?
A: Death is not taken lightly in Dreamoor. There are many forms of combat that are not lethal, but nonetheless it still happens. If you have Destiny remaining you can use a Feat to escape death. If you have no Destiny, your character is dead forever and you must make a new one. This should be rare, though, unless you do nothing but fight.

Q: Does Dreamoor have craft skills?
A: Yes. There are skills for armor crafting, weapon crafting, alchemy, building, and several others. Many types of crafts, like cooking, can be done by anyone and require no special character skill. Most crafts in Dreamoor follow a component system. For example, you create a handle and an axe blade then put them together to form an axe. This allows for flexibility, and creativity when creating items. Using special materials can give your creations special strengths. In this way, creativity and thought are stressed when crafting new items, rather than how much a player has macro'ed up their crafting skill.

Q: Is combat in Dreamoor realtime or turn-based?
A: Yes. :-)
Actually, its a combination of the two. Each combatant gains turns at a rate based on their speed and can use them at any time to move, attack, cast magic, perform a skill, or prepare a defense/counter-action. Counter-actions include counter-attacks and counter-magic which can be used to not only prevent damage to yourself, but damage your opponent--many times using their own attack strength against them.

Q: Does Dreamoor support PvP (Player-vs-Player) combat?
A: Yes. Players can kill other players without limitations, except those within the game world. For one, combat is risky. Even a strong player could lose to a weaker one if the weaker one gets lucky. In addition, being known as a criminal could cause you trouble down the line--everything from imprisonment, to banishment, to outright execution. In towns there are also guards who will break up any fights. There are no "safe-areas" where fighting is disallowed, but it is not wise to fight where you could get caught.
Should you wish to fight non-lethally, you can change your intent to something non-lethal. You can also fight in an arena, of which there are a couple. Most unarmed combat, such as wrestling, is non-lethal.

Q: How does Dreamoor prevent grief-players?
A: Since combat is inherently risky (see above), no grief players will be able to always win, especially if a group of other players work against him. Coupled with Destiny, any player that just causes trouble will eventually suffer permanent death.

Q: Will I lose my equipment if I die?
A: Yes. You may be able to recover it if you are ressurected quickly, or if no one loots it all. Monsters and NPCs that kill you will take any equipment they deem useful, and if intelligent enough, will use it themselves.

Q: Can I macro in Dreamoor? or Will other players ruin Dreamoor with macros?
A: Yes, no. You can set macros for any action, and some may be useful (such as putting poison on your sword, or yelling "Help me!"), but no one will be able to artificially strengthen their character using macros. Combat is too complex to macro, as are all other significant activities. In addition, all such activities take time and must be performed seperately. In short, macros are allowed (although officially discouraged) but cannot ruin the game.

Q: Can I build houses? How?
A: Yes. If you have the skill (if not you can hire someone with it), you can construct a house outline, then finish it. Finishing it adds the floor and ceiling, but it checks to make sure the outline forms a proper shape (complete walls, etc). Building a house from scratch is expensive, especially for large ones.
On the other hand, players will be able to destroy houses as well. While destroying a house takes a long time, even with proper equipment, it can be done. Walls can be broke down, windows broken out, doors kicked down, etc. If the house suffers enough damage, it collapses completely into rubble. So raiders can burn down houses, castles can be seiged, and so on.
There will be houses for sale and rooms for rent in cities, as well. Property in and around cities must be purchased, but you gain with it protection, and the ability to acquire Citizenship in that town.

Q: Can I have pets? and Can I hire NPCs?
A: Yes. You can train, or purchase, or summon any number of animals or followers. NPCs can be expensive, and are usually hired for a single purpose--delivery, to collect a bounty, etc. Mercanaries can be hired to join you as well.

Q: Can I get titles in my name?
A: Naturally. In fact, there are dozens of possible titles in Dreamoor. In addition to titles given through government and military positions, there are many titles given for attaining mastery in a skill. For example, an armor-crafter could get the title of "Master Armor Smith", while an Elementalist could get "Fire Lord". There are many other miscellaneous titles, such as those given as rewards. You'll be able to choose which title (if any) is displayed by your name.

Q: What type of terrain exists in the world?
A: Currently planned: Two types of town, two types of castle, plains, forest, desert, mountain, cave, water. There will most likely be several more as Dreamoor is finalized. Each region on the map will be unique and hand-crafted. The goal is to ensure that each can be recognized at a glance. Dreamoor hopes to get away from the endless identical forests of other MMORPGs. Each and every location should be memorable.

Q: Does Dreamoor support "safe-trading" to prevent fraud?
A: Currently, no. You can hand items directly to players, but there is no safe-trading system as in other games (such as Diablo 2).

Q: Can I steal in Dreamoor?
A: Yes. You can pickpocket, or even break into houses to steal. Just like killing, though, this is risky and the punishments can be very severe if caught.

Q: Can players capture other players/NPCs?
A: Yes, but unless the other player is weakened they will probably resist, or escape. You can use rope to tie up players (or NPCs), or even cages to contain them. Kidnappings, prisoners of war.. all are possible in Dreamoor.
Captured NPCs usually won't do much, but this is the first step towards taming a wild creatured.

Q: Will my character experience hunger and fatigue?
A: Not directly. If you haven't eaten or rested, you will not be able to recover Chaos, Metal, Sky, and Void very well, but you will never die of hunger.

Q: Will wearing heavy armor slow my character down?
A: Yes. This will be most noticable in combat, but it does somewhat affect movement speed as well.

Q: How many types of weapons and armor are there?
A: Many. In addition to that, there are various special types of each, and a slew of enchantments and bonuses they can get.

Q: Will I be able to form parties?
A: Yes. You'll be able to name your party whatever you wish, and can invite people to it, kick people out, etc. While there is no "party communication channel" or anything similar (like many MMORPGs have), forming a party is necessary for many spells, and it makes things much easier.

Q: How many skills and spells does Dreamoor have?
A: More than a hundred. In addition to that, certain skills or spells can be combined with each other or used in different and unique ways.

Q: Will players be able to create new spells?
A: Not directly. You will be able to combine various spell effects in different ways and do new things, but you'll never get a completely new, distinct, spell.

Q: Is there religion in the game? Can players choose which god to worship?
A: Yes. Unlike other games, Dreamoor doesn't have just one religion where you merely choose which god you like best, it has several different religions. Each is tied to the culture and location they come from, and each has very different beliefs and ideas behind it.
